Using the Heavy Duty Bariatric Commode
The NOVA Heavy Duty Bariatric Commode can be used as a standalone bedside commode or positioned over an existing toilet. Before each use, make sure the commode is on a level surface, all four legs are adjusted to the same height, and the legs and backrest are securely locked into position.
Using It as a Standalone Commode
For standalone use, the included bucket is inserted from the front of the commode beneath the seat. NOVA notes that the bucket handle must rest along the side of the bucket for it to insert correctly.
- Place the commode on a level surface in the desired location.
- Make sure all four legs are adjusted to the same height and their push buttons are completely engaged.
- Remove the lid from the bucket before use.
- Position the bucket handle along the side of the bucket.
- Insert the bucket from the front of the commode.
- Check that the commode, backrest, legs, and bucket are properly positioned before use.
Using It Over a Toilet
The commode can also be positioned over an existing toilet. NOVA specifies that the included splash guard is used when the commode is positioned over a toilet rather than being used with the bucket.
- Remove the bucket from the commode.
- Install the included splash guard beneath the seat.
- Position the commode securely over the toilet.
- Make sure all four legs are adjusted to the same height and stand securely on a level floor.
- Check that the frame, backrest, and legs are stable before use.
Adjusting the Height
Each leg is height adjustable using a push-button mechanism. Press the button and slide the leg up or down to the desired position, then make sure the button completely engages in the selected adjustment hole.
- Adjust all four legs to the same height setting so the commode remains level.
- Make sure every push button is completely locked into its adjustment hole.
- Check the legs before each use.
- Always use the commode on a level surface.
Assembling the Commode
NOVA specifies quick assembly without tools. The backrest inserts into receivers on the rear legs, and the adjustable legs use push-button connections.
- Insert the backrest into the receivers located on the rear legs.
- Make sure both backrest push buttons are fully engaged.
- Pull upward on the backrest to confirm that it is securely locked into place.
- Adjust each leg to the desired height using its push button.
- Make sure all four legs are set to the same height.
- Check all connections before using the commode.
