Using the Heavy Duty Drop-Arm Commode
The NOVA Heavy Duty Drop-Arm Commode provides an extra-wide toileting surface with arms that can be lowered for easier side transfers. Before each use, make sure the commode is positioned on a level surface, all four legs are adjusted to the same height, and the backrest and arms are securely locked into position.
Using the Drop Arms
Both arms can be lowered to provide easier side access when transferring to or from a wheelchair or bed. Always support the arm while lowering it and make sure it is completely locked before placing weight on the armrest.
- To lower an arm, hold the arm securely and squeeze the release lever located underneath it.
- Carefully lower the arm out of the way for the transfer.
- Complete the transfer using the appropriate assistance and transfer technique for the user.
- To raise the arm, slowly pull it upward until the locking pin engages in the receiver.
- Make sure the locking pin is fully engaged before placing weight on the armrest.
Using the Commode Bucket
The included bucket inserts and removes from the front of the commode. NOVA specifies that the bucket handle must rest along the side of the bucket for it to insert correctly and that the bucket lid is intended for transport only.
- Remove the lid from the bucket before using the commode.
- Position the bucket handle along the side of the bucket.
- Insert the bucket from the front of the commode.
- Make sure the bucket is correctly positioned beneath the seat before use.
- Use the bucket lid for transport rather than leaving it on the bucket during commode use.
Adjusting the Height
The height of the commode is adjusted using the push button on each leg. NOVA requires all four legs to be adjusted to the same height so the commode remains level.
- Depress the push button on one leg.
- Slide the leg up or down to the desired height.
- Make sure the push button fully engages in the selected adjustment hole.
- Repeat the adjustment on the remaining legs.
- Make sure all four legs are set to the same height before using the commode.
Installing the Backrest
The backrest inserts into receivers located on the rear legs of the commode. Make sure both push buttons are fully engaged, then pull upward on the backrest to confirm that it is securely locked into place before use.
